Yeah, that would probably freak me out too...

I just walked in and caught the tail end of a discussion that S and B were having over lunch. They were swapping stories about gross things they've encountered (surprise, surprise!) when S trumped B by shouting:

No WAIT! Do you remember that time that we dug a hole in the backyard and found all of those larvae?! It looked like a bunch of penises crawling around in the dirt!

Mmmmkay. Have to admit that that would probably have grossed me out as well...

Can't wait to see how many hits I get from Google now that I've used the words "penises" and "dirt" in the same post.

Oh, and to the person who found my blog yesterday (from work!!!) by using the search terms "mother-in-law" and "panties"? Ewwww.

Isn't it amazing? My hits went way up when I posted about Las Vegas... and any post about life at Microsoft tends to skyrocket things too. I HAVE been looking for ways to increase traffic, but part of me just wants things to stay more "organic."

How would you where your hits on you blog comes from? I'm quite new to blogging and all the little search gadgets you can get so now I'm really curious =)

I've just added a little icon to my url (favicon). Doesn't have any impact what-so-ever but it's kind of fun adding, fixing and adjusting the templates.

I think I just found the answer to my question earlier. Google webmaster tools. Is that right?

Hi Astrid! I tried to e-mail you but couldn't find an e-mail link on your site.

I've just been using the information I get from Site Meter to track visits and who's coming from where. If you look at "Referring URL" you can see where they're coming from and they usually mention search terms used if they've found you through a search engine.

I don't know anything about Google Webmaster tools but will definitely have a look.

Technorati is really interesting-- you should definitely register yourself there. That way people can find you with searches and you can see which websites link to yours.

You can also do a search on Google or Altavista for "link:http://www.XXXXXXXXX.com" to see which sites link to yours. (but replace XXXXXXX with your URL, of course. :-) )

If you get a chance I'd be interested in seeing how you changed your little icon up on the address bar! (My email address is dyevushka at yahoo dot com. )

Have a nice weekend!

I use statcounter to track some traffic on my blog. It's free and you can copy paste a bit of html code into your blogger template. It is explained on their website and I managed to do it. Afterwards you can login at statcounter and see how many people visited your blog that day, their IP address, if they came from a search engine, if they are returning visitors (somebody who visits the first time gets a cookie and then the next time statcounter knows they've been at your site before). The free part remembers the last 100 hits in great detail and just the totals from your startdate.

I have no clue whether statcounter is the best one, there are loads of similar free tools out there, I just took the first one I came across. Good enough for me.

All you techies are a wonderful albeit unexpected bonus of reading blogs! Talk about a wealth of info! Bets, I'll have to send you a link to a blog my brother-in-law just set up, you may get a kick out of it. He's a bit of a twisted "Mr. Mom" and although there's not much logged yet, I think his perspective is a scream. Will send you a note ...

Do you want more random traffic to your blog???

Betsy said...

Hi Lis! Random traffic is just a given when your blog is public. Some people are good potential contacts and some aren't.

I'm assuming that the ones who come here using searches for "naked women in drndls" or "Nudie bars in Brussels" get tired and leave.

and apparently there are others out there who stumble across my blog, like it and choose to come back.

It's really nice to have a diverse group of people reading a blog-- and it's great when they comment because it adds an extra dimension to the posts.

The whole social dimension to blogging has kind of taken me by surprise. So for those of you who are regulars around this corner of cyberspace: THANKS!
