Language Week 2007: Française

This picture graced the side of our orange juice cartons when we were camping in France. And to tell the truth it irritated the crap out of me.

Maybe it was because I had to look at it every morning before my coffee or maybe because my kids started using it as a valid argument to change our eating habits. ("If the orange juice box says it then it must be healthy!!!")

Or perhaps it could be due to the fact that I'd initially read it to be the "idéal" thing to feed your family in the mornings. (again, blame the lack of caffeine...)

Anyway, according to Jafaden orange juice company I could have been serving:
  • a glass of orange juice
  • a slice of (white) bread
  • a pot of cottage cheese and
  • four squares of chocolate.
(Which probably would have been healthier than the pain au chocolat that they were eating anyway.)

This week I'm waxing nostalgic about our vacations in the Provence... M is gone and I'm feeling a bit stressed while preparing for the exam. And I guess I can then end this posting on an extremely clichéed note and say:

C'est la vie!

It's ideas for an afternoon snack, by the way. Don't know why I'm defending an orange juice box decoration, though.

Is it really? Don't know why I didn't think of that earlier. See, my french is even worse than we thought!

Uh huh. Also, fromage blanc isn't cottage cheese. It's that creamy stuff that would be yoghurt if it were sour and had a culture in it. I forget the Dutch word. Probably 'fromage blanc'! Oh wait, plattekaas, I think. You know, kwark. Do you have something against plain dark chocolate and fromage blanc as a snack?

While I'm picking on you (sigh, Erwin's away), I would like to point out that the slice of bread pictured has little brown dots in it, which white bread cannot claim to have. Do you get BBC1 or 2? There's a thing on about Paris now, which is quite informative and entertaining.

I don't think we have a word for fromage frais in English-- I know what it is but fell short of being able to describe it. Just like Kwark-- there's no real word for it is there?

No, no problem at all with kwark and chocolate as a snack. It just grated on my nerves every morning at breakfast because everyone had to comment: Where's the chocolate? (har dee har har.)

Guess you had to be there...

I'd better post something new quick as a diversion so the next people who visit my blog don't realize just how pointless this whole posting is...

OK, that's one thing I won't budge on. That bread looks white. And tasteless. And nutrition-less. Yick!

(We seem to be on and commenting at the same time!)

No, of COURSE we don't have BBC! That would require an actual cable package. And we didn't get one in order to force us all to watch German TV.

Which I'm watching now in lieu of studying. A really sappy show that I already knew I'd regret watching even before it really got underway.

I don't think I would be drinking orange juice with my afternoon snack, anyway. Sappy German TV sounds really bad. Can't you watch something worthy on Arte instead?
