Only in Holland...

...can one spend the evening with one's parents-in-law watching a documentary about the plastic surgery boom featuring a full half-hour dedicated to "vaginal rejuvination" and cosmetic genital reconstruction.

Whoa. I can't imagine. And what was the conversation like during/afterwards?

Shake my head like an etch-a-sketch...

Would TMI work in this case?

Too funny,

I guess I can feel lucky that it's all about the boobs and the tummy tucks in Germany. There are some things I REALLY don't want to see on TV! :-)

:-) This documentary was actually extremely interesting. It would have tied right in with the thread that Anno and Jenn did on beauty.

The woman who made it was saying that our ideas about beauty are completely skewed because of an unrealistic ideal propagated by the media.

That women used to hold real women as their ideal beauty standard, but that now they strive to look like airbrushed supermodels in glossy magazines. And that as a result today's women are more insecure and feel less attractive than our grandmothers.

She talks about the genital cosmetic surgery as an extreme form of trying to achieve ideal "beauty". And she actually interviewed a few women who felt so insecure about the way their genitals looked that they had cosmetic surgery to look more "beautiful" like the women they see in Playboy. It was astounding.

There were some before and after shots, but none of it was gratuitous.

In fact, the whole thing was so tastefully done, and my parents-in-law are so laid back that I wasn't uncomfortable watching it with them. But I did have to laugh later when I realized that it was kind of a funny situation.

Ellen-- it's called "Beperkt Houdbaar"-- sounds like you might have seen it?

Actually, the show does sound interesting, now that you've explained it! Nice to have such a relaxed relationship with your inlaws, too.
