Get along little doggies! (Yippy ti yi yo!!!)

I helped chaperone S's class field trip to the theater this morning. Which wasn't exceptional in itself. The really amazing part about the whole thing?

They walked there.

Yep, you heard me right. They went to see a play in the next town over and they walked almost 4 miles to get there!

This is one of the things that I love about living in this part of Germany!

That's totally great. My DS's school is located downtown so they can walk for field trips, mentorships, etc., but there's still much driving by parents and school buses.

oh really? that's cool. Don't see that happening in Belgium, unfortunately.

Huh? Well I hope the reward was that they were nice and tired that evening!

The Germans are great walkers.

So there was an added benefit to the obvious ones of walking. (and it was through the woods, so it was a really nice hike anyway.)

S has four or five hyperactive boys in his class. They are complete terrors and run roughshod all over everything both in class and on field trips. We've walked places before, but never this far, and this was the first time that actually behaved.

I actually think that part of the teacher's motivation was to let them burn off some energy before they had to sit still for any length of time...

That is the true genius of the walking field trip system: Tired kids = quiet, well behaved kids.

Our kids did a 6k field trip and said they would never go again. This comes from growing up in the States with the dream of a "yellow bus" field trip. Although the bumpy bus ride could bring about the same effect, nauseated kids = quiet kids?!?! ;-)

I agree the walking idea is a good one.
