Sweet memories

I'd heard from Russian friends that there's a Russian supermarket nearby. For some reason I'd been picturing it as a dank hole-in-the-wall with shelves which are empty save for dusty bottles of vodka.

My friend and I stopped in after our Aikido lesson this morning and I was shocked! The staff is all Russian and there's Russian radio playing over the loudspeakers. I felt like I'd stepped into the Twilight Zone!

They've got all kinds of specialty foods that I haven't even thought about in years, including a wide assortment of Красный Октябрь candies that I used to eat by the fistful during my days in Moscow. Some of them still taste like cardboard, but they bring back sweet memories...

What would you get? What are the things that you miss the most?

Amazing, the connection between food and memory. It only takes seeing a box of Red Zinger tea on the shelves to take me back to my life ca. 1978. Sounds like you enjoyed your journey back in time as well ...

Maybe I should pick some up in St Petersburg next time, are they really that good?

Goofball what on earth would you buy at a Canadian store? Old Dutch chips and dip? Smarties?

Let's just say they're an "acquired taste". Most of the chocolate ones taste like cardboard, but if you eat enough of them they start to grow on you.

These are really great, though. They've got candied nuts in them and they're worth trying!

I had always thought Swiss and German chocolate the best until my Russian sister-in-law shared some Russian chocolates with me. Hands down, the best I've ever had.

D., our youngest son who studies in Montreal frequently yearns for a Target store. Go figure.
